Artist Statement
“Process saves us from the poverty of our intentions.”
-Elizabeth King, Sculptor
I create abstract paintings through complex layering to evoke a sense of history, something under the surface. Some paintings may have 10 layers, others 100. I work until the painting feels true and alive. While acrylic paint is my primary medium, I often incorporate drawing media and collage as well.
My work is shaped by the fullness of my lived experience: growing up in the desert, living in the green and blue landscapes of the San Francisco Bay Area and Pacific Northwest, running a small farm - the deep connections I've had with people, animals, and places. I'm also influenced by existentialist philosophy - the idea of absurdity, with meaning created only through our choices.
Each painting begins with a random mark. It then unfolds like improvisational music or dance: fluid, intuitive, and unplanned, taking cues from what was done before. My practice is staying present with the materials as I allow my higher knowledge to explore memory, emotion, and the unknown.
